Kanha Tiger Reserve

Kanha Tiger Reserve is home to twenty two species of mammals, two hundred plus birds, millions of insects and reptiles. The bio diversity - flora and fauna - is amazing. Kanha National Park is home to Bengal tigers, rare hard ground barasingha (swamp deer), barking deer, sambar, spotted deer, leopard, sloth bear, Indian wolf, and amazing variety of butterflies and wild life.

Kanha Forest
is an ecosystem that supports a complex web of life which form a food chain. The food chain exhibits inter connectivity among life forms. The tiger is at the apex of the food chain. The forests are pure Sal at places, Bamboo on hill slopes and mixed forested zones interspersed with grassy meadows in the gelens and rivers originating from two major river systems Halon and Banjar both tributaries of River Narmada.

The nature preserve has an area of 1940 sq.km of which 940 sq.km is the core zone and rest is the buffer zone. Project Tiger program plays an active role in conservation of tigers at Kanha hence the park is a tiger reserve. The habitat ranges from large grasslands or meadows, dense forests on hills and plains, wetlands, rivers and table land on the hills or dadars as they are referred in Hindi.

Kanha is the best place to see the tiger in the wild. It is possible to see the tiger on a three night safari. Tigers are often seen around the core area while leopards can be seen both in the core and buffer zones. The spotted dear, langur and peacock are the most commonly experienced feature of the park. Wild boar, Sambar, Swamp deer, jungle cat, jackal, are sighted frequently. The leopard, wild dog or dhole and sloth bear are seen but with luck. The reptiles at Kanha National Park are shy and nocturnal along with small mammals like civet cat fox, porcupine, ratel, and hare.

Kanha is habitat for more than two hundred and fifty bird species which includes winter visitors. Ideal for watching forest birds as lack of very large water bodies restrict the number of wetland birds. Bird watching on jeep safaris is a rewarding experience. Bird watching is conducted on nature trails outside the park.

Kanha Wildlife Preserve is in the Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in the Maikal hills which are the trailing edge of Satpura ranges. The topography is beautiful and scenic with rolling hills and grassy valleys. The park opens on 1st October and closes on 30 June every year.

How to reach ?
